I came across this article about an (impressive) implementation of a multi-touch table that was created by a group of engineering students from India. The table uses FTIR touch sensing technology that was first used in this context a couple of years ago by Jefferson Han (if that name doesn’t ring a bell, the video of Han playing with a video-wall probably will). The software was built around Touchlib (NUI Group) an open source library for creating multi-touch interaction surfaces.
The demo by the Sparsh team shows how their table can be turned into a mixing table for DJ’s (among other).
So, maybe it is possible for user-interfaces to evolve beyond WIMP after all!
